WEEE, Bayer, and the Environment
As the amount of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) requiring disposal increases, governments are grappling with how to reduce the amount of EEE disposed in landfills. The European Union (EU) has enacted a Directive, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), aimed at increasing the rate of recovery, reuse and recycling of electric and electronic equipment.
All EU Member states (National Governments) are obligated to implement and transition the Directive into national legislation. Electrical (electronic) devices contain parts that must be handled selectively according to the EU directive. Separate collection and selective treatment are the basis for environment-friendly disposal and the protection of human health.
Therefore, the WEEE Directive requires the following:
- Separate collection possibilities for used electrical and electronic equipment (e.g. within a municipality)
- Marking of electric/electronic equipment as of August 2005. Electrical and electronic equipment subject to the WEEE Directive will be marked with the WEEE symbol, a wheelie bin with an X through it, and a solid black bar below. The symbol will look like this:

The following rules apply for equipment used and taken back from business customers (not from private households):
- The Producer is responsible for the take-back of WEEE put on the market after August 13, 2005, but producers and users can conclude other agreements.
- For historical waste (put on the market before August 13, 2005):
- The last owner is responsible for disposing of the equipment.
- The Producer is responsible to take back old equipment when replacing it with equipment of the same intended use.
Bayer is committed to compliance with the WEEE directive and has contracted with RENE AG (Recycling Network Europe AG) to provide pickup and recycling of qualified Bayer Radiology and MEDRAD® branded WEEE in the EU countries where Bayer sells directly to the customer.
For Bayer Radiology and MEDRAD® branded products purchased through a distributor, please contact the distributor directly for recycling information.
Please note: Products that are considered as a biological hazard or have been medically contaminated are not to be recycled through this program, but must be treated as biohazard waste and disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Do I have to pay for the collection of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment?
A: Providing the WEEE is a Qualifying Bayer Radiology and MEDRAD® branded product you do not have to pay for collection.
Q: What constitutes "Qualifying" equipment?
A: Qualifying Equipment is Equipment that is branded Bayer Radiology or "MEDRAD®" and carries the Wheelie Bin logo or any brand of equipment that has been replaced by another (new) Bayer Radiology or MEDRAD® branded piece of equipment that will perform the same intended use as the unit being replaced. Equipment purchased through a distributor should be managed under the distributors WEEE recycling program.
Q: I have a piece of MEDRAD® Branded equipment that does not carry the Wheelie Bin Logo. It is being replaced by another piece of Bayer Radiology MEDRAD® branded equipment, but this was not part of the sales contract (I did not trade it in or receive value for it). Is collection still free of charge?
A: Yes, collection is free of charge provided the equipment is Bayer Radiology or MEDRAD® branded and it is being replaced by another piece of Bayer Radiology MEDRAD® branded equipment that will perform the same intended use.
Q: I have an MR injector that is no longer required and is not labelled with the Wheelie Bin. I am buying a new Bayer Radiology MEDRAD® branded CT injector; does this qualify for free collection (of the MR injector)?
A: Sorry, no. The new CT injector cannot be said to be replacing the MR injector. Should you have further questions, please contact your Bayer Radiology Sales or Services Representative in your respective country.
